Ben Chester Cheong is Of Counsel in the financial services (regulatory) and ESG practices at RHTLaw Asia LLP and a Lecturer in Law at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). He graduated with first-class honours in law from the University of Exeter and earned a Master of Law from the University of Cambridge. Ranked 3rd in the Singapore Bar Examinations (Part B), he is a prolific legal scholar whose research has been cited by the Singapore government, INTERPOL, and WIPO. His expertise is regularly sought by global media, and he has worked on high-value transactions at Baker McKenzie.
Ben Chester Cheong is an accomplished lawyer, educator, and legal scholar with expertise spanning financial services regulation, ESG, corporate law, and legal theory. A 2024 MOE START Scholar, Ben holds a Master of Law from the University of Cambridge and an LLB (First Class Honours) from the University of Exeter, where he was ranked 2nd out of 241 students and awarded multiple academic prizes. He ranked 3rd out of 664 candidates in the Singapore Bar Examinations (Part B), the highest-performing Cambridge graduate that year.
Ben is widely published across private and public law, corporate and commercial law, technology law, and legal theory, with over 150 citations, including by the Singapore government, INTERPOL, and WIPO. His research has appeared in leading journals such as the Law Quarterly Review, Journal of Business Law, International Company & Commercial Law Review, and European Papers. He also serves as an invited referee for numerous journals.
As an educator, Ben has received the Outstanding Teaching Award (2022) and the Excellence in Teaching Award (2021) at SUSS, where he has convened core modules including Law of Business Organisations, and taught courses on contract law, equity & trusts, and corporate practice at the Singapore Bar Examinations.
Professionally, he is dual-qualified in Singapore and England & Wales. He began his career at Baker McKenzie, where he worked on cross-border financing transactions exceeding US$500 million, as well as IPOs and bond issuances. Today, Ben continues to bridge academia, practice, and policy, making significant contributions to both legal scholarship and professional practice.
